1) Promote local consumption, thus saving energy
It is more important than ever
that the USA (and the world) begin moving away from sources of energy
which are limited (oil, gas, coal...). As the supplies of these energy
sources shrinks, the cost is going to go up, having dramatic
effects on the world economy. The more we begin
saving NOW, the longer we have to find alternative energy
sources. The more time we have to transition to new energy
sources, the
less painful the transition will be (hopefully). By shopping and
participating in local
activities, energy that would have been used for
unecessary travel is saved.
2) Create a more interactive community
As people spend more time in
their local community, they will come to know their neighbors, as well
as the local business owners. This relationship creates a stronger
sense of identity with a place, which creates more a sense of
"home" for people, which in turn leads to a community that is involved
with enhancing the quality of life for the community as a whole.
3) Help support small local businesses
With the support of the local
community, local business grow and adapt to the needs/wants of the
residents of the community, creating a more desirable place for all to
live with a higher quality of life. Without local businesses, the
community suffers, as it is then necessary to travel outside the area
for needed goods and services. As community grows, local businesses
grow, providing an alternative to the generic shopping malls and big
box retailers.
